Though we might not hear about famous female athletes as often, there are plenty of women that have dominated their chosen sport just as much as their male counterparts. Yet despite their accomplishments, the world of sports remains largely male dominated. At Toys For Big Girls, we know this needs to change.
Below we discuss some of the most inspirational famous female athletes of all time. They go to show that ladies not only kick butt at golf, swimming, and tennis, but at more intense, traditionally males-only sports like hockey, MMA, and NASCAR as well.
MMA: Ronda Rousey
Mixed Martial Arts, a famously brutal sport, has largely been dominated by men. That’s not the case anymore. As soon as Ronda Rousey, nicknamed “Rowdy,” stepped onto the scene all that changed. Since her first amateur fight in 2010, she has risen to the top of the UFC ranks as the number one pound-for-pound female fighter in the world. She is particularly well known for her penchant for trash talking her opponents before taking them down.
NASCAR: Danica Patrick
Not only the most influential woman in the sport’s history, Danica Patrick is also one of the most popular NASCAR drivers (male or female) of all time. One thing we love about her is the fact that she competes against the boys day in and day out. This has made her a hero in the eyes of many people, propelling her into the worldwide spotlight and ranking her as the top household name on the entire circuit. Yet despite her pretty face, it’s Patrick’s ability on the track that does the real talking.
WNBA: Diana Taurasi
Few female basketball players are more influential than Diana Taurasi. After playing in pro leagues all over the planet, she found a more permanent home with the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. She also helped TEAM USA win three Olympic gold medals. In addition to her many accomplishments, the 6-foot point guard actually changed the way that women’s basketball is played. Much like Magic Johnson, she brought size, strength, and style to the point guard position.
Professional Soccer: Mia Hamm
It goes without saying that Mia Hamm is one of the most successful and influential female soccer players of all time. A founding member of the women’s professional soccer league the Washington Freedom, the superstar also helped Team USA win two of the first four Women’s World Cups. She also helped Team USA win the gold at both the 1996 and 2004 Summer Olympics. She is ranked as one of the top 125 living players (as ranked by Pele) and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007.
Hockey: Angela Ruggiero
Hockey is a sport that has long been dominated by men. It’s also a sport that has long been dominated by those from cold weather countries like Canada, Russia, and Scandinavia. When Angela Ruggiero hit the scene all that changed. The recent Hockey Hall of Fame inductee (2015) hails from California and is by far one of the most talented female hockey players of all time. A key member of the 1998 Nagano Olympics gold medal team, she also helped Team USA win the silver medal at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Get Involved in Sports!
Despite changing times, many women today have been and still are discouraged from participating in sports, especially rough and tumble ones like those discussed above. We’re here to tell you that we don’t agree with this for a second! At Toys For Big Girls, we encourage you to get out there and kick some butt at whatever sport it is you like, whether you play in a competitive league, a pickup league, or just in the backyard with friends.
